The last couple of days I have been over in Spain watching The Vuelta, Tour of Spain, (cycle race, for the uninitiated), and it got me thinking about the strategies we employ in order to create amazing results. I'm not suggesting we all should be professional cyclists, it's more about recognising that we do use some kind of strategies whether they work or not in our daily life. That got me thinking, of how we cut and paste to remove or insert a new thought into our text, so could we do the same with our strategies? Using cycling as an example, not that I'm building an influencing strategy around getting you regularly on a bike...me, never. More using an aspect of what a keen cyclist, or sports person does that you would like to employ into your life. If your wish was to be more motivated, or more consistent in what you wanted to achieve, you could look closer at people who already employ a strategy that creates motivation and consistency, then cut and paste it into your area of change. So let's take a closer look at a strategy to create this. I call this one 'modelling excellence', well, I say 'I' call this one, 'modelling' is the basis of NLP. It's the process of finding out how people go about doing something, whether accomplishing a task, performing a skill, or creating a style of living which supports them to have a fulfilling life. You can begin by asking questions like: "How do they do that"? "How can I move towards doing that? "What would I have to do?" "Who would I have to ask?" "What are the benefits for me of doing this?" etc. If you personally know the person you want to 'model', you can ask them questions like: "Were you always able to do this"? "Do you do this consciously"? "What made the change, for you to do it differently"? "When do you use this"? etc.
There are many other ways to 'Model Excellence. You can read someone's autobiography, talk with someone who knows them well, go and work for them, for free if necessary. You can watch a video of them, this works well if for example, you wanted to be a more successful comedian, which leads me into the last section today. It's to look for the nuances of what people do, the difference between one comedian that gets the laugh, verses another that doesn't. Watch 'Show me the funny', ITV1 at 9pm, a perfect opportunity to notice those differences. Remember change occurs with immediate effect by just a slight difference in what you were doing before! I have seen amazing changes with my clients using this strategy. So there you are ready to 'model excellence', identify an aspect of change, cut & paste the new strategy, practice daily, note the benefits.
Have a great time, back to my Tour of Spain! Hasta Luego
